Venturi Capital Advisors Lobbies SEC in support of proposed rules, requests that legitimate equity advisors and placement agents be allowed to represent managers and access public pensions.
21 September 2009 (New York, NY) – Venturi Capital Advisors, a New York-based equity advisory firm, has joined the industry call for greater oversight and tighter scrutiny over the marketing practices of private equity advisors and placement agents.
In a letter to SEC Secretary Elizabeth Murphy, Paul N. Arena, Venturi’s President and Founder, called on the Agency to “move decisively to advance the proposed rule(s) that seek to monitor and guide the conduct and performance of equity advisors and investment fund placement agents.” Mr. Arena defended the legitimate business practices of most equity advisors and placement agents, but offered that “to restrict my firms’ and the industries’ ability to represent investment managers who require professional representation and marketing services, would prove destructive to an integral part of the equity raising and private placement process.”
In weighing in on the matter, Venturi Capital Advisors joins a growing roster of placement agents and equity advisors such as the Park Hill Group, Atlantic-Pacific Capital, Probitas Partners and others, who would be negatively impacted should any potential ruling ban third party marketers from soliciting or otherwise doing business with public pension plan sponsors.
“The differences,” Arena wrote, “between my firm, other legitimate private placement firms, and those individuals and firms identified in the recent “pay-for-play” schemes, are distinct, and clear.” Arena continued, “We serve a useful function by bringing important, portfolio diversifying investment strategies to the investor community.” “Our compensation is solely success based, and we have not and will not ever request, take or imply that compensation should come from any other source but from the clients/managers we represent.” “Further, we have never contributed to any PACs or political campaigns which would inure to the benefit of persons or entities responsible for the allocation of public pension assets, nor have we ever compensated in any way, monetary or material, a “Finder” to influence an investment decision or outcome made by any investor, including any public pension plan,” Arena concluded.
